Toronto Maple Leafs swap Versteeg with Flyers for draft picks

The Toronto Maple Leafs fire sale continued on Tuesday when GM Brian Burke dealt forward Kris Versteeg to the Flyers for their first-round and third-round picks in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The Leafs have also made two separate deals with Anaheim in the last two weeks with the Leafs picking up Joffrey Lupul, Jake Gardiner, a fourth-round pick in 2013 and Aaron Voros, only having to give up Francois Beauchemin and a seventh-rounder in 2011. These deals all seem to imply that Burke is silently admitting his rebuilding plan isn’t working out, so he’s making the move to Plan B.

Hossa finally finds the holy grail

The third time was a charm for Marion Hossa, who, after three straight appearances in the Stanley Cup Final, finally got to hoist the shining silver mug. Hossa’s Penguins fell four games to two in the 2008 Finals. In the offseason, Hossa jumped ship to champion Detroit and hoped for a repeat, but his new Red Wing brethren came up one game (and one goal) short of this feat. They lost, of course, to Hossa former allies from Pittsburgh.

49-year drought just days away from ending

Chicago finally applied the strategy everybody knew would work: stop Chris Pronger, win the game. In that order. Pronger was an uncharacteristic minus-five in a 7-4 Chicago win in Game 5. The Blackhawks are now one victory away from ending their reign as the team with the longest streak without having won a Stanley Cup. 1961 feels a lot longer ago than 49 years for many fans in the Windy City, and they may only have wait as few as two more days to bring the Cup back home.

What’s the story of this Stanley Cup Final? We know that the Chicago Blackhawks, after clinching the Central Division, have cruised through the first three rounds in the Western Conference while the Philadelphia Flyers, after squeezing a playoff berth away from the Rangers in a shootout victory, had a roller coaster ride through the East by making quick work of New Jersey, then becoming just the third team in history to come back from a 3-0 series deficit, then obliterating the weary Canadiens. But how do those two paths converge into something entertaining?

Who did the more unthinkable?

At first glance, a seventh versus eighth seed series in the Eastern Conference final could make you scratch your head. But if you don’t know the story about how the Philadelphia Flyers and Montreal Canadiens became the final two teams in the east, then obviously you’re not a hockey fan. With an identical point total of 88 at the end of the regular season, to have expected either of these teams to be alive at this point would have been crazy, yet here they are, and they’ll battle for the rights to play for Lord Stanley’s Cup starting next Monday night. But who has done the more unthinkable?

Playoff ride not short on stories

Vancouver lays an egg and Philadelphia survives to battle another game. Pittsburgh squeezes a win out of Montreal and San Jose ousts Detroit in five games. It’s just more of the same incredible stories in these NHL playoffs. Regardless of who has been playing on any given night, this playoff season has not been short on storylines. As the second round of the postseason winds down, it’s easy to forget that there’s still a full two series left to play.

Eastern Conference; who against who?

Waking up after another ridiculous impact game from Jaroslav Halak as the Canadiens evened up their series with the Penguins last night at two games apiece, I quickly realized that I had no idea that the other series in the Eastern Conference, Philadelphia against Boston, is even going on. After taking a quick look, I found that Boston holds a 3-0 stranglehold on the Flyers with a chance to clinch tonight. I also found that I’m not alone in my ignorance over this series.

Pennsylvania hockey running strong

The state of hockey in the state of Pennsylvania is good. With both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers moving on to the second round of the 2010 NHL playoffs, there’s a storyline nobody expected to come taking place. We’re still a full series away from a potential Stanley Cup-berthing series, but as two of the remaining eight teams, the Keystone state is well-represented; although the two teams arrived at their destinations in very different ways.

Game 7, Game 82…it’s all the same

On the final day of NHL competition, it usually comes down to one thing: who will be playing who in the playoffs? That’s exactly the situation in the Western Conference as all eight playoff teams were determined earlier this week, but still, five of the eight seeds are variable. In the Eastern Conference, things are quite the opposite. The first six seeds are all determined. The last two are up for grabs between three teams in a game of NHL musical chairs.

The final days of the 2009-10 NHL season

With only six days left in the NHL season, there are still four playoff spots yet to be clinched, and a lot more seeds to be finalized. The Eastern Conference is still pretty open, with Montreal, Boston, Philadelhpia, NY Rangers and Atlanta competing for three spots. We know teams one-through-seven in the Western Conference, but that final place will see the toughest competition, as all of Colorado, Calgary, St. Louis and Anaheim compete for it.
